Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Representative Ralph Norman of South Carolina have sponsored a joint resolution to limit the terms for members of both the Senate and House of Representatives. The resolution proposes a limit of three terms for members of the House and two terms for members of the Senate. In order to be ratified, the resolution must gather the support of ¾ of both chambers by December 2022.

Despite overwhelming approval from 82% of Americans, support for term limits within the walls of the Capitol remains dismal. This great disparity should only further emphasize the growing disconnect we have with our representatives, and demonstrate the lengths to which elected officials seek to divorce the American people from the power endowed to them by the Constitution. Your representatives would rather wield this power to wage war over resources on behalf of multi-billion dollar corporations, to serve the legislative whims of corporate/PAC donors, and to climb the political ladder through electioneering using the very same donations.

Luckily, the potential for this abuse of power was not underestimated by the Framers of the Constitution. This is why the Article V amendment process provides for a Constitutional Convention to be called by ⅔ of the country’s State Legislatures. While this process has yet to  be exercised throughout the entire history of this nation, we have already made progress on this front. Fifteen out of the required thirty-four states have already applied for a convention on a resolution including the enactment of term limits on Congress.

If the current trend continues, a State Convention will be necessary to impose term limits on Congress, but change can be inspired at any magnitude. Call or write to your legislators, state, local, and federal, and demand accountability to the needs of the majority. Talk to your friends, family, and coworkers about their disaffection with the actions of the U.S. government. Together we can turn up the heat and finally remind our legislature who holds the power in this democracy.
